Sapara Monastery

It is an orthodox monastery built in the 9th century and located near the village Ghreli. For centuries, this monastery played an important role in the history of Georgia as the residence of the Jakeli family, a ruling dynasty of the feudal Principality of Samtskhe.

Today it is a place for tourism and religious pilgrimage.

Akhaltsikhe Castle means "New Castle" in Georgian. Its history dates from the 9th century to the present day.

The castle has witnessed empires, conflicts and cultural changes. It passed through the hands of various dynasties and kingdoms, including the Arabs, Byzantines, Mongols and Ottomans. Each left its mark, giving rise to a unique blend of Islamic, Christian and Ottoman architecture.

Green lake

The green lake is surrounded by mountains full of vegetation. However, its name is due to the unique green colour of the water.

The lake is fed by underground springs that make the water so clean that it can be drunk. It has volcanic origin, so in the background you can find black rocks.

Atskuri fortress

Atskuri Fortress, built in the 10th century, is located on a rocky hill on the bank of the Kura River. It was an important bastion for the defence of Georgia in the middle Ages.

In the 13th century an earthquake shook the whole area, so, currently, it is in ruins and does not have a homogeneous structure. There is still an old entrance tunnel to the prison and the lower parts of the fortress walls.
